Team Profile

The Rev Up weekend successfully incubated a genetically sound team ready to take on the world of government.

Dan is great at doing clever things with code. His education in Commerce and Information Systems coupled with his experience as a Test consultant means Dan gets the tech and always delivers beautiful products.

Nic is a ball of energy. She is the queen of persuasion who enjoys forming meaningful relationships. Her background in law and experience as a test consultant means Nic sees problems from a unique angle.

Alex cares about the user. He carefully analyses people’s interactions then designs something which enables a user to have a magnificently seamless experience. Alex’s experience as a UX consultant in the public sector provides us the valuable insight needed to put the sparkle back into government.

Together we are visionaries who share, inspire and create innovative solutions. The sky is the limit. As individuals we compliment one another to make a genetically strong team.

What we heard

Our understanding of the problem

We spoke with Steffan and Dean from Immigration NZ about the Employer Accreditation process, and discovered several pain points that affect both applicants and Immigration NZ.

Paper Based

Applications for Employer Accreditation are paper based. The paperwork must be transported by mail between the employer and different Government offices around the country, handed over to administration, and filed and ordered by staff. This results in unnecessary handling of applications before they’ve been reviewed.

Resource Required

The job of filling in an application or renewal is given to an HR employee, or sometimes a lawyer or consultant. It requires considerable time to complete and thus is an opportunity cost. This cost is a barrier to entry for many SMEs that would otherwise benefit from being accredited.

Errors

Many applications contain errors and must be returned (about 70% of first-time applications, and 30% of renewals), further adding to the resource cost and time delay.

Transparency

The status of a business’s application is not made visible to them:

  • If their application requires changes or more information, they are only made aware of this when their application is returned by mail.
  • Not all businesses are sent reminders of their impending renewal deadline.
  • Some businesses use OIA requests to gather the information they had sent last year because they don’t keep a copy.
  • Some businesses forget (due to high HR churn) that they are accredited.

Our thoughts

How we can apply digital solutions to these pain points

Transparent Allow businesses to access the status and content of their accreditation application, through the use of a digital dashboard. Therefore, they will know when they will be accredited, what additional documentation they need to provide to Immigration NZ, and when they will need to renew their accreditation.
Fast Ensure that applications are processed significantly faster with the use of digital solutions. For example, making documentation digital will remove the reliance on mailing and storing physical documents, making access easier for both Immigration NZ and accredited businesses.
Flexible Different industries have different needs. Customising the application process depending on the size and type of business could significantly reduce the amount of paperwork required to become successfully accredited.

Why should we be in R9?

Team DNA is a great team made up of three talented people. We are a determined and exuberant bunch, who are excited to be a part of the R9 Accelerator.

During the course of the Rev Up weekend, our passion for the problem was obvious - we genuinely care that talented people from all over the globe are given the best chance at having a career in our beautiful country.

We want to help Government improve this. We want to innovate. Challenge. And transform the current process. And of course, have fun and learn a lot while doing this! Our unique team dynamic, drive and sense of fun makes us an fantastic fit, not only as a team, but for the R9 Accelerator.
